Most families in Dehradun know they should get police verification done for their maid. Very few actually do it, because nobody explains how — and the answers online are either for tenants or for other states.
Here is the process as it actually works in Dehradun, both the online route and the offline one, with the documents you need and a realistic idea of how long it takes.
A note before we start: this is general guidance, not legal advice. Procedures and timelines differ between police stations and change from time to time. Confirm the current requirement at your local thana before you begin.
There is no single central law that makes police verification of domestic help mandatory across India. Tenant verification is treated more strictly in many places; domestic help verification is usually advised rather than enforced.
That said, individual districts and police stations do issue directions from time to time, and many residential societies in Dehradun now require it before issuing an entry pass.
Leaving the legal question aside — this is someone who will be in your home, often alone. Verification costs you nothing and takes a form. There is no good reason to skip it.
Collect these from the person before you fill anything in. If she cannot provide the first two, that is itself worth pausing over.
Take photocopies, never originals. Keeping someone's original identity documents is unlawful. Photocopy what you need and hand the originals straight back.
Uttarakhand Police runs a citizen portal with a Citizen Services section covering verification requests, and the same services are available through the Uttarakhand Police mobile app, which brings tenant and employee verification into one place.
| 1 | Open the Uttarakhand Police citizen portal or appLook for the Citizen Services section. Verification requests sit there, alongside tenant and employee verification. |
| 2 | Register, if you have not used it beforeFirst-time users create an account with a mobile number and verify it by OTP. |
| 3 | Fill the verification formHer details, both addresses, your details as the employer, and the police station area she will be working in. |
| 4 | Upload documents and submitAadhaar copy and photographs. Note down the reference or acknowledgement number. |
| 5 | Wait for the local enquiryThe request goes to the police station covering her address. Someone may visit or call to confirm details. |
There is also a national Digital Police portal run by the Ministry of Home Affairs that accepts antecedent verification requests for domestic help and drivers. Responses there come by email.
The process is only partly online. The form goes in digitally, but the actual enquiry happens at the police station covering her permanent address — which may be in another district or another state entirely. That is what decides how long it takes.
Still the most reliable route in practice, and the one most Dehradun families end up using.
| 1 | Go to the police station in your areaNot hers — the one covering your house, since that is where she will be working. |
| 2 | Ask for the domestic help verification formSome stations hand it over at the desk; some ask you to write a simple application instead. Either is fine. |
| 3 | Fill it and attach the documentsHer Aadhaar copy, photographs, both addresses, and your own ID. |
| 4 | Take her along if you canNot always required, but it speeds things up and avoids a second trip. |
| 5 | Get an acknowledgementAsk for a receipt or a stamped copy. Societies often ask to see it, and it is proof the request was filed. |
There is no fixed timeline, and anyone who gives you an exact number is guessing. Realistically:
If her permanent address is in Dehradun
Usually faster — the enquiry stays within the same district.
If it is another district in Uttarakhand
Longer — the request has to travel to that district's police station and come back.
If it is another state — UP, Bihar, Nepal border areas
Longest, and sometimes it simply does not come back. This is common and not necessarily a bad sign.
Do not wait for it before she starts. File the request, keep the acknowledgement, and let her begin. Verification is a background process — treating it as a gate just means you go unverified for months instead.
Worth being clear about this, because families often expect more than the process delivers.
What it does
What it does not
A reference call to the family she last worked for often tells you more about day-to-day reliability than any document. Our guide on what background verification should actually cover explains how the pieces fit together.
Verification cannot realistically proceed without it. Help her get one — it is free, and she needs it for far more than this.
Very common. Put both addresses on the form — the one on Aadhaar as permanent, and her current Dehradun address separately. The form has space for both.
Usually because she thinks it means you suspect her, or she has had a bad experience with someone keeping her documents. Explain that it is routine, that you are keeping only photocopies, and that a verified worker gets better-paying placements. Most people are fine once that is said plainly.
Normal, especially for out-of-state addresses. Follow up once at the station with your acknowledgement number. No news is not the same as a problem found.
A genuine agency completes this before the candidate reaches you — identity, address, police verification and a previous employer reference — and will show you the documents if you ask.
Ask to see them. An agency that says everyone is verified but cannot produce a single document has not done it.
The other questions worth asking before you pay anyone are here: how to choose a maid agency in Dehradun.
There is no single central law making it mandatory for domestic help, though individual districts and police stations issue directions from time to time, and many residential societies require it before giving an entry pass. Check the current position at your local thana.
Yes, partly. The Uttarakhand Police citizen portal and the Uttarakhand Police app both carry verification services under Citizen Services. The form goes in online, but the actual enquiry still happens at the police station covering her permanent address.
Her Aadhaar card copy, permanent and current addresses, two photographs, her phone number and a family member's number, and previous employer details if any. You will also need your own ID and address proof as the employer.
There is no fixed timeline. It is quicker when her permanent address is in Dehradun, slower when it is in another district, and slowest when it is in another state. File the request, keep the acknowledgement, and let her start work rather than waiting.
The verification request itself is a government service and should not require any payment to an individual. If anyone asks you for money to process it, that is not part of the official procedure.
No. Keeping someone's original identity documents is unlawful. Take a photocopy for your records and hand the original straight back.
Every house maid, cook and driver we place completes identity verification, address confirmation, police verification and a previous employer reference before reaching your door — and we will show you the documents.
