Whether you are hiring a driver or looking for driving work in Dehradun, the first question is the same — what is the right number?
Ask five people and you will get five answers, because driver pay here depends on four things: the type of driving, the hours, the licence class, and whether outstation trips are involved. This guide breaks all of it down.
These are indicative monthly ranges for 2026. The lower end is typical for a fresher, the upper end for an experienced driver with a clean record.
Personal / family driver
₹12,000 – ₹20,000 per month
School runs, daily office commute, market trips, occasional drives to Mussoorie or Delhi. Usually 8 to 10 hours with a fixed weekly off.
Company / office driver
₹14,000 – ₹22,000 per month
Staff pick-up and drop, client transport, airport runs, bank and courier work. More formal arrangement, often with overtime counted separately.
Commercial / goods driver
₹15,000 – ₹25,000 per month
Delivery vans, goods carriers, tempo. Needs a commercial licence with the correct vehicle class. Longer hours and more physical work.
Live-in driver
₹15,000 – ₹22,000 per month + meals & stay
Less common, but requested by larger households and families with elderly members who may need a hospital run at any hour.
Within any of the categories above, experience moves the number significantly.
| Fresher — under 1 year Valid licence, limited experience | ₹10,000 – ₹13,000 |
| 2 – 5 years Comfortable with city traffic and local routes | ₹14,000 – ₹18,000 |
| 5+ years Clean record, hill route experience, references | ₹18,000 – ₹25,000 |
| Commercial licence + 5 years Goods vehicles, long routes | ₹20,000 – ₹28,000 |
Dehradun is not a flat city, and that changes what employers pay for.
| ✓ | Hill route experience. The Mussoorie climb, Chakrata road, the Rishikesh stretch in monsoon. This is a genuine skill and families pay for it. |
| ✓ | Commercial licence. Opens goods and larger-vehicle work, which pays above private driving. |
| ✓ | Willingness to do outstation trips. Delhi, Haridwar, Char Dham route. Usually paid as an allowance on top of salary. |
| ✓ | A previous employer reference. One phone call from a past employer is worth more than anything written on paper. |
| ✓ | Background verification. Verified drivers are offered better-paying placements, because families are willing to pay more for someone whose record is documented. |
The monthly figure is only part of the arrangement. These should be settled before the driver starts — unclear terms here cause most driver-employer disputes.
For employers: a ₹14,000 job with clear terms holds a driver longer than an ₹18,000 job where every extra hour becomes an argument. Replacing a driver costs more than the difference.
Work out your number by answering three questions:
| 1 | How many hours, really?A school run plus an evening pickup is not the same as a full 10-hour day. Be honest about it, because the driver will work it out in week one anyway. |
| 2 | Will there be outstation trips? If yes, decide the per-day allowance now rather than negotiating it the night before a trip. |
| 3 | What vehicle, and what routes?A small car on city roads is one thing. An SUV on hill routes with your children in it is another, and should be paid accordingly. |
For why verification matters before you hand over the keys, see how a background-verified driver keeps your family safe.
Most drivers accept the first figure offered, then feel underpaid six months later. A few things that help:
| → | Know the range before the interview. The figures above are the market. Walking in without a number means accepting theirs. |
| → | Ask about hours before quoting. If the work is heavier than you assumed, your number should reflect that. |
| → | Mention hill driving if you have it. Many drivers do not realise this is something employers specifically look for in Dehradun. |
| → | If the work grows, say so. Added outstation trips or longer hours are a reasonable basis for revisiting the salary. |
Looking for driving work? The full process is in our guide on how to get a driver job in Dehradun without paying any fees.
Roughly ₹12,000–₹20,000 per month for a personal or family driver, ₹14,000–₹22,000 for a company driver, and ₹15,000–₹25,000 for commercial or goods driving. Experience, licence class and outstation duties move the figure within those ranges.
A driver with a valid licence but under a year of experience typically starts at ₹10,000–₹13,000 per month. Two to three years of experience and one good reference usually moves that to ₹14,000–₹18,000.
The employer, always. A driver is paid to drive the vehicle, not to run it. Fuel, servicing and repairs are the owner's responsibility.
Usually yes. An allowance of around ₹300–₹500 a day is common, along with food and accommodation on overnight trips. Agree the amount before the first trip rather than during it.
A commercial licence takes longer to obtain, the vehicles are harder to handle, the hours are longer and the work is more physical. Fewer drivers hold the right licence class, so demand outstrips supply.
Yes. The Mussoorie climb, Chakrata road and the monsoon stretches near Rishikesh require real skill, and employers here specifically look for drivers who are confident on them.
